Hailey Merrill spreading the world in El Sal
The Surfrider Foundation is a non-profit environmental organization dedicated to the protection and enjoyment of the world's oceans, waves and beaches for all people, through conservation, activism, research and education (C.A.R.E).
The Charleston Chapter of the Surfrider Foundation concentrates on keeping our beaches and waterways free of trash and unnecessary development to keep the Lowcountry beautiful, for your enjoyment. PLEASE NOTE: The Charleston Chapter of Surfrider has opened up a group on Facebook, which will be a much better way for us to network and organize.
Please go to Facebook at www.facebook.com, and if you have not registered in facebook yet, go ahead and do that, then search for the the Facebook group "Surfrider Foundation Charleston, SC", and join that group.
If you are already on facebook, then simply join the group.
The SI sweeps are already under way! Join Amy and Sallie on March 28th for a morning clean up.
Here's the deal for the FB sweeps: Sweeps once every 2 weeks of the Washout and Pier Area (2nd East to 2nd West)-with one group per area, on Sunday afternoons/evenings. We need volunteers and group leaders for the following groups. (Group leader--meaning you'd be at all of your groups' sweeps and would bring gloves and bags, let me know!! This is a great way to get your hands dirty and feel good about keeping our beaches clean). If you're interested, let me know and include your email address so I can put together some group lists.
Group A Pier--April 5, May 3 and 31, June 28, July 26, Aug 23
Group B Pier--April 19, May 17, June 14, July 12, Aug 9, Sept 6
Group A Washout--April 5, May 3 and 31, June 28, July 26, Aug 23
Group B Washout--April 19, May 17, June 14, July 12, Aug 9, Sept 6
Speaking of beach sweeps, on March 7th, the Wando HS Surf Club did a wonderful job cleaning up IOP! Thanks to everyone who came out for that!
On PR:
To help spread the word, Mike Arendt appeared on Lowcountry Live on Feb 12th, and Ryan Olson appeared on March 6th (thanks to Kate Ditloff for her connection). As a side note, I remember saying in my last update that Mike was our "resident marine biologist," and then the next day I realized that in fact we have TONS of marine science people in the group. So, in fact, we're very lucky to have many many resident marine biologists :)
Kate Barratini and her friends Jonah Jeter and Kat Miller did a killer job on the press for the kickoff! Now we're working on getting ads in some of the local papers, so keep your eyes open for those. Also, we've got a radio connection now too, so keep your ears open :)
On activities:
We've had to push back the grocery store tabling from our original March dates to April 3 and 17 due some scheduling trouble. We'll have tables at the Mt. P, JI, and East Bay Harris Teeter. Please let me know if you're interested in hanging out at a grocery store on a Friday afternoon.

Our new re-usable bags!!
Only $1, contact us to buy one.
